Don’t let a busy schedule get in the way of family fun this holiday season. Use these easy organization tips to stay on top of it all.

1. Create a checklist. Make a list of your must-do items — be realistic if you are really tight on time. Slot tasks (work and fun) into each day leading up to the holidays to help you determine what will make the cut. Find creative ways to fasttrack your preparations; try a “cook-from-frozen” turkey, canned cranberries, store bought pies and digital Christmas cards.

2. Speed clean.
Call in the troops and focus on the areas you and your guests will use. Use a timer and holiday music to motivate everyone. Start with a quick purge to cut down on clutter, then move from one end of the house to the other with your dust rag and mop in hand. Keep things tidy by having a quick family cleanup each night after dinner.

3. Shop smart.
Use these three shopping rules for last minute shopping: Have a plan: create a detailed list of the people you are buying for, including budget, sizes and possible gift ideas. Show up early: Arrive at your shopping location before it opens. You’ll avoid long lines and stressed shoppers, and be able to find a good parking spot! Default to gift cards: If you’re really stumped for the perfect gift, go with a gift card; your friends and family will thank you for it.

4. Simplify wrapping.
Now is not the time for creative wrapping and fancy DIY bows! Cloth bags, gift bags and a single style of paper will make your wrapping process move along at lightning speed. Set up a table, spread out your gifts, create gift tags for each, and place with the gift. Next, put as many gifts as you can in your stash of gift bags, top with tissue and attach a tag. Move on to your wrapping. Be quick, attach a gift tag and you are done!

5. Downsize decorating.
Last minute decorating may require you to cut back on the number of decorations you put out. Focus on favourite family traditions and special decorations. Use this opportunity to scale back your collection and donate some items.
