Let’s celebrate – it is World Doula Week!
I often recommend doulas to my patients and their partners who are seeking additional support during the birthing process. This week I have invited my friend Erin Botrie, Birth Doula at Glow Maternity Studio & Apparel to tell us a little bit more about what life is like as a doula, and why choosing a doula might be the best thing that you ever did for your family. Read on to find out more!
What is a Doula?
A Doula is a professional birth coach, or companion. Usually women, Doulas are trained in many techniques proven to enhance the birthing experience and help strengthen partner involvement through support. We offer comfort measures to help you cope in labour which can be helpful whether or not your labour includes medication. We are with you from the moment you need us in labour until after you have your baby. The extent of Doula support has proven to provide women a shorter labor with fewer complications, reduced need for induction or interventions and ultimately fewer caesarean births; statistics indicate a reduction in the need for c-sections by 80%, wow! We are able to offer focused, engaged and intentional support no matter where, or how, you decide to birth. As a doula, it is our priority to help you make informed choices about your care and help you towards your best birthing experience!
What to Expect:
When you meet with a doula, it is important to remember you are inviting her to be part of a very momentous occasion in your life! What qualities in a person do you need to see to feel comfortable and at ease? Remember that a doula will see you at your most vulnerable, so it’s important to find someone you have a real compatibility with. You and your partner will get to know your doula throughout pregnancy, ask questions and make requests of her. As doulas, we work with each family on an individual basis, and provide appropriate care based on your distinct needs. As doulas are not clinically trained, we may offer advice but always recommend consulting with your medical practitioner for serious concerns.
Why Hire a Doula?
There are many reasons for hiring a doula. For first time couples, having someone with experience in birth can be the main incentive. For others, doula support might help implement a specific birth plan. Need information and education? Often doulas have certain expertise but if there is something we don’t know, we know someone who does and have an endless well of resources.
