It’s hard to believe but this stunning faux-stained suncatcher is made almost entirely from white glue. Using the simple template provided, your child can easily create one or two for special friends this Valentine’s Day.

And who knows, that special someone might be you!

Supplies:
Makes 1 suncatcher

  • heart template (see Step 1)
  • wool (black is best)
  • white glue
  • 3-4 small containers
  • scissors
  • large plastic sandwich bag
  • food colouring
  • toothpicks
  • single hole punch
  • 20″ string
  • glitter, sequins, small embellishments (optional)

Step 1: Go to Northumberland Kids homepage and print off heart template. Cut out selected design. (One is blank so your child can make her own design.)

Step 2: Place heart inside sandwich bag.

Step 3: Cut enough wool to go around the outside of the heart and to make the dividing lines inside the heart.

Step 4: Pour a small amount of white glue in a container, and fully immerse the pieces of wool. Make sure each piece is covered in glue.

Step 5: Pick out the largest piece of wool and gently remove any excessive amounts of glue. Place wool around the perimeter of your heart on top of the plastic sandwich bag. Follow the same steps for the dividing lines.

Step 6: Pour small amount of white glue into 2 or 3 small containers (depending on
how many divisions there are) and add a few

drops of food colouring – a different colour for each bowl. Don’t add too much colour; you want your suncatcher to be transparent.

Step 7: Spread each colour of glue into the heart’s divisions on top of the plastic bag. (For a swirling effect, pour two colours beside each other in one section and use a toothpick to gently pull colours into each other.)  Make sure the glue covers the surface and goes to the edges of the wool.

Step 8: Optional: Sprinkle glitter, sequins or small embellishments on top of the glue for an added effect.

Step 9:  Let your heart dry for 24-48 hours. You’ll know it’s dry if the edges of the heart start to curl and the glue becomes transparent.

Step 10:  Carefully peel heart off the plastic sandwich bag. (If heart curls too much, place under a heavy book.) Use the hole punch to make a small hole at the centre top of the heart. Pull the string through and knot at the top.

Have your child wrap up the suncatcher before presenting to their special Valentine.
